Switchgear Classification
The voltage level of switchgear can be categorised into the following categories.
- Low voltage (LV) Switchgear
- Medium voltage (MV) Switchgear
- High voltage (HV) Switchgear
Low Voltage
Low-voltage switchgear is typically rated at 1000 volts AC and 1500 volts DC. Oil circuit breakers (OCBs), air circuit breakers (ACBs), switch fuse units (SFUs), off-load isolators, HRC fuses, earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCBs), Residual Current Protective Devices (RCCB & RCBO), miniature circuit breakers (MCB) and moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB) are all examples of low voltage devices that are commonly used.
Medium Voltage
Medium-voltage switchgear is available in classes ranging from 3.3 kV to 33 kV. The main purpose of medium voltage is to distribute electrical energy to various electrical networks. Most substation equipment, such as minimum oil circuit breakers, bulk oil circuit breakers, air magnetic, SF6 gas-insulated, vacuum, and gas-insulated , is included in this category. Medium-voltage should be able to do the following:
- Switching on and off as usual.
- Current interruption in a short circuit.
- Capacitive currents are switched.
- Inductive currents are switched.
- There is a unique application.
All the functions listed above must be performed with a high level of safety and dependability.
High Voltage Switchgears
High voltage refers to the power system that deals with voltages more than 36kV. The arcing created during switching operation is likewise very high due to the high voltage level. As a result, more caution should be exercised while constructing high-voltage switchgear. The major component of HV is high voltage circuit breakers (such as SF6 circuit breakers or vacuum circuit breakers). As a result, unique characteristics on high voltage circuit breakers are required for safe and reliable functioning.
High-voltage circuit breakers with faulty tripping and switching operation are rather uncommon. Most of the time, these circuit breakers remain in the ON position and can be turned on after a long period of time. As a result, circuit breakers must be dependable enough to ensure that they operate safely when needed.
